What about my recessed lighting or “cans”? Does the insulation go on top of them?

Wool insulation and can lights

Recessed lights, commonly referred to as "cans," are classified by manufacturers as either IC (Insulation Contact) or non-IC rated. IC-rated fixtures are designed to safely come into contact with insulation. Before starting your project, it is essential to verify the rating of each individual light fixture. Keep in mind that these fixtures can also contribute to air leakage if not properly sealed. To optimize energy efficiency, it is recommended to air seal the recessed lights and position insulation around them, rather than placing it directly on top.
